What are Laminate Veneers?

What are Laminate Veneers?

Laminate veneers are porcelain veneers designed specifically for the front surfaces of the teeth. They are applied to reshape your smile, adjust the color tone and close the gaps between teeth. This technique is the most preferred application in smile design. Veneers are dental restoration applications that can have a thickness of 0.1 mm to 0.4 mm. Although laminated veneers are very thin, they are strong. These are ceramics that have very high aesthetic properties and are applied to the front teeth. Laminate veneers can be applied by abrading only the front surfaces of the teeth or without any abrasion.

Laminate dental veneers can be applied during smile design treatment to people with high expectations of aesthetics and naturalness, people with low-level crowding, people with gaps in their teeth, people with indentations and protrusions in their front teeth due to lack of mineralization.

How to Apply Laminate Teeth

During the porcelain laminate veneer treatment process, the thoughts and expectations of the person who will have laminate veneer should be carefully listened to. The patient's complaints about his teeth, the points he does not like about his teeth (tooth color, form, etc.) and his expectations from the treatment should be thoroughly understood. After the patient's expectations are fully understood, an examination is performed with photographs of the patient's mouth and x-ray analyses. Other dental needs are also planned in the first session. The patient's need to whiten natural teeth that are contaminated due to reasons such as tea and cigarettes, scaling, gum level, inlay and onlay fillings for tooth decay, and all other requirements are determined in the first session. After this, the measurements determined in line with the patient's wishes are reported to the technician. The technician creates a silicone mold of the teeth by making a wax model on the plaster, showing how the final appearance of the teeth will be. This process is called 'Mock Up'.

In the second session, temporary materials created from the silicone key are placed on the patient's teeth and the final state of the teeth is shown to the patient. At this stage, photographs are taken again. Afterwards, the patient's opinions are taken and the final state of the teeth is clarified. After it is clarified how the teeth should be, cutting and editing of the teeth begins on the same day. After the procedure, the patient uses the temporary teeth until the next treatment session. After 3-4 days, permanent laminated porcelains are bonded in the third session and the treatment is completed.

There is no excessive tooth cutting in porcelain laminate veneers. The aim is to make the most functional and longest-lasting laminated teeth without exceeding the enamel layer. In porcelain laminate treatments, the aim is to complete the treatment with an aesthetic appearance by causing minimal damage to the teeth. Nowadays, laminate veneers are widely preferred because they are the fastest aesthetic application and provide the most similar results to natural teeth.

In Which Situations Are Porcelain Laminate Veneers Applied?

Porcelain dental veneer treatment is applied in the following cases:

In advanced levels of discoloration where a suitable result cannot be obtained with teeth whitening,

To close gaps between teeth

In lengthening tooth lengths and shape changes,

To treat fractures and deformities in teeth,

In cases of low-level crooked teeth,

To repair wear on teeth,

To eliminate the concerns of people with aesthetic appearance concerns.

Who Cannot Apply to Porcelain Dental Veneers?

Porcelain dental laminate veneer is not applied in the following cases.

For those who have teeth grinding and clenching problems at night

People who have habits such as biting nails, tearing threads with their teeth, or biting the back of a pencil

If there are very large fillings on the tooth or if there are fillings covering at least 3 surfaces of the tooth, laminate veneer cannot be applied in these cases because the best grip of laminated coatings occurs in the enamel layer.

Porcelain laminate treatment is not recommended for teeth with a very worn enamel layer. When porcelain is applied to teeth with a low enamel layer, the retention and life of the laminate veneer is reduced.
